All About Hair Loss

 Hair Loss

Hair loss is a condition where the hair falls off the head excessively. This condition can be temporary or permanent and hair can fall out little by little or a lot suddenly.

The normal amount of hair is about 100,000 strands, and will be loose or fall out about 50-100 strands every day. This is a normal condition, because the hair that falls out will be replaced with new hair.

There are 3 phases in hair growth namely the anagen phase is the growth phase, the catagen phase is where the hair stops growing and the phase where the hair starts to fall out is the telogen phase. If these phases are disrupted, the hair will fall out excessively, leading to baldness.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by heredity. An unhealthy diet can also cause the fertility of the hair roots to decrease, resulting in hair loss. In addition, there are several other things that factor into hair loss, namely:

  • Autoimmune diseases, for example in Alopecia Areata
  • Side effects of chemotherapy
  • Hormonal changes, for example during childbirth or due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Side effects of medications, such as immunosuppressants, gout medications, and high blood pressure medications.

Symptoms of Hair Loss

The symptoms that can be seen from hair loss are as follows:

  • Thinning of hair at the crown of the head
  • Thinning of hair evenly on the head
  • Hair loss all over the body

Hair Loss Treatment

Treatment of hair loss depends on the cause. In hair loss that occurs due to hormonal changes during childbirth, the thickness of the hair will return to normal within 6-9 months postpartum.

In stress-related hair loss, the doctor will advise the patient to undergo counselling and psychotherapy. Meanwhile, if hair loss occurs due to poor nutritional status, the doctor will advise additional nutritional intake and multivitamins.

Other medical treatments can be done when a person starts to feel their appearance is disturbed due to hair loss. Some of the treatment methods that can be done to overcome hair loss are:

  • Administration of scalp ointment containing minoxidil
  • Administration of medication containing finasteride or spironolactone
  • Use of specialized hair loss shampoos
  • Hair grafts or transplants, to treat baldness due to hair loss
